I like the lineart and the coloring. Matter of fact: I like the style overall.

What bothers me however is that it's difficult to make out the characters and understand the artwork.

Thanks! I really needed to hear something like this today. I can totally see where that concern is coming from, but I'm still caught on the fact that you like the style/lineart/coloring of the art as a whole as that's something I take into a lot of consideration while making these.

Yeah alot of the modern styles are kind of featureless, I like when characters have more pronounced facial features and the nose isn't just a dot.
